Pre-insulated pipes for district heating in a hospital in Poland: the Opoczno project with Iso-technik
When designing the distribution of heating and chilled water for a hospital, there is no place for compromize. Operating conditions are demanding, expectations regarding service life are high, and every technical choice – starting with the pipework – affects the performance of the entire system for years.
It is against this backdrop of requirements that we present the project carried out in Opoczno, Poland, where our Iso-technik pre-insulated pipe system was chosen for heating and cooling distribution in a hospital building. This project shows how, in a highly complex field such as healthcare, the right technology makes a difference not only in terms of performance but also in terms of the overall cost-effectiveness of the project.
The challenge: a hospital building with complex technical systems requirements
Opoczno is a town in central Poland, in the Łódź Voivodeship, whose urban area has significant growth in civil and healthcare infrastructure over recent decades. The project involved the installation of a distribution network for process heat and chilled water within a hospital building: a type of plant system that requires solutions capable of simultaneously ensuring high energy efficiency, resistance to thermal and mechanical stresses, and long-term reliability.
For this project, pre-insulated polypropylene pipes from the Iso-technik system were used with operating diameters ranging from 160 to 200 mm and smaller ones, a range of sizes that perfectly meets the requirements of main distribution networks in the civil and healthcare fields.
The installation was carried out by Tebar Opoczno, a Polish company specializing in mechanical engineering, which successfully utilized the system’s technical characteristics with expertize and skilful execution.
Why Iso-technik: the technical and cost-effective choice
The project management team chosed for Iso-technik pre-insulated pipes following a careful assessment of the available options on the market. And the reasoning was clear from the outset.
With traditional solutions, typically pre-insulated metal pipes, it would have been necessary to provide additional pipe protection using sheet metal casings, which would have had a direct impact on construction costs and site completion times. Iso-technik has deleted this complexity at source, thanks to its proper protected structure: the PP-RCT WOR service pipe (fibre-reinforced polypropylene with high resistance to oxidation), the rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam and the external PE-HD coating form a compact, durable system that is ready for installation without any additional work.
“Choosing Iso-technik allowed us to significantly simplify the installation phase. With metal pipes, we would have needed additional protection, which would have prolonged the installation time and driven up costs. Here, we worked with a complete, ready-to-use system,” confirms Tebar Opoczno, the installation contractor.
However, cost optimization was not the only factor driving the decision. Three technical factors carried equal weight in the final decision.
The three key advantages of Iso-technik for this project
- Resistance to external factors
In this specific application, an above-ground installation was required, made possible by the ease with which the materials can be laid. Furthermore, the Iso-technik system offers total resistance to corrosion – galvanic, stray current and chemical – thanks to the fibre-reinforced PP-RCT service pipework, and total protection against UV rays thanks to the PE-HD casing. Furthermore, there is no risk of degradation due to oxidation: a feature that metal pipes, however well protected, cannot guarantee with the same structural reliability.
- Superior energy efficiency
Heat loss along distribution networks is one of the key parameters in the design of district heating and technical fluid distribution systems. Iso-technik pre-insulated pipes excel in this regard: the high-density polyurethane foam has a thermal conductivity of 0.023 W/mK, whilst the fibre-reinforced PP-R service pipe ensures a thermal conductivity of 0.19 W/mK – compared to 52 W/mK for steel. The result is minimal heat loss even in the presence of high temperature differentials (ΔT), with direct benefits for the system’s overall energy efficiency and operating costs.
- Ease and speed of installation
Iso-technik pre-insulated pipes, for diameters such as those used in Opoczno (160–200 mm), are joined by butt welding using dedicated Aquatechnik equipment. This method is precise, reliable and significantly faster than the joining techniques typically used for metal pipes. The low linear mass compared to steel solutions also makes handling on site easier, reducing logistics times and costs.
The Iso-technik system: structure and technology
To fully understand the choice made in Opoczno, it is useful to briefly describe the system’s architecture.
Each Iso-technik pre-insulated pipe consists of three main components:
- A service pipe made of PP-RCT WOR (White Oxidation Resistance), fibre-reinforced with an intermediate layer of PP-RF which reduces linear thermal expansion by up to 70% compared to single-layer pipes. Available diameters range from 32 to 315 mm.
- PUR insulation (closed-cell rigid polyurethane foam), produced by the reaction of polyol and isocyanate with special additives. The structure, with over 90 % closed cells, traps air, ensuring outstanding insulating performance.
- External casing made of corona-treated PE-HD, which completes the ‘bonded’ system by ensuring perfect adhesion between all layers and maximum mechanical and external protection.
Iso-technik fittings – elbows, T-pieces, reducers and special fittings – are manufactured by welding fittings from the Fusio-technik range to pipe segments from the Faser series, which are then pre-insulated with PUR and covered with a casing. A fitting solution that maintains the same performance characteristics as the straight pipework at every point in the network.
Available diameters: the complete range of Iso-technik pre-insulated pipes
One of the most highly regarded features of the Iso-technik system is its wide range of diameters, covering applications ranging from domestic distribution to primary district heating networks and the distribution of process fluids. Depending on flow rate, temperature and pressure requirements, you can choose from three series – FIBER-T, FIBER-COND and FIBER-LIGHT – each with specific SDR features and areas of application.
| Range | SDR | Ø service pipe | Ø external casing | Available Length | Main application |
| ISO FIBER-T | 7,4 | from 32 to 200 mm | from 90 to 315 mm | 5,8 m and 11,6 m rods | High-pressure and high-temperature primary networks, top-of-the-range district heating |
| ISO FIBER-COND | 11 | from 32 to 315 mm | from 90 to 450 mm | 5,8 m and 11,6 m rods (ø 315 only 5,8 m) | High-temperature heating, medium-temperature domestic hot water systems |
| ISO FIBER-LIGHT | 17,6 | from 125 to 315 mm | from 225 to 450 mm | 5,8 m and 11,6 m rods (ø 315 only 5,8 m) | Medium-temperature and medium-pressure heating, air conditioning, irrigation |
Iso-technik worldwide: an Italian and international choice
Our Iso-technik system has been used successfully in many projects in Italy, such as those at San Siro and Galliate, and abroad, such as in the United States, where the quality of ‘Made in Italy’ manufacturing, combined with design focused on energy sustainability, meets a growing demand for high-performance pre-insulated district heating pipes.
Iso-technik pre-insulated district heating pipes meet the requirements of the main industry standards: EN 253, EN 448, EN 489, DIN 8075 and UNI EN ISO 15874. This compliance ensures their suitability for use across different regulatory contexts and in technically demanding applications, as demonstrated by previous applications – including the district heating project in Padua.
